Debunking Myths for WEAAD, Week 2: Aging Myths

Why it mattersWeek 2 of our World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) Myths vs. Facts Campaign is here—and this week, we’re turning our focus to understanding aging.

Too often, aging is treated as a single experience. In reality, older adults are not a “one-size-fits-all” population. Their lives are shaped by health, culture, language, trauma history, social connections, and access to resources. When these differences are overlooked, real barriers to safety, wellbeing, and justice can emerge.

That’s why effective responses to elder abuse must be individualized, respectful, and accessible, honoring each older adult’s autonomy, dignity, and lived experience.

At the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL), recognizing the diversity of older adults’ lives is central to our mission—and essential to preventing and responding to abuse.
