WEAAD Week 5: Clearing Up Misconceptions About Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse
Older survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse face barriers that are often overlooked. Many experience deep social isolation, rely on caregivers or abusive partners, manage age‑related health challenges, and navigate systems that were never built with their needs in mind. These gaps can intensify trauma and limit access to safety, justice, and healing.
When professionals lack specialized training, abuse can be minimized, risks missed and support delayed. But with the right knowledge and tools, we can identify harm earlier, respond effectively, and improve long‑term outcomes for older adults.
Investing in education and training isn’t optional — it’s essential. By partnering with NCALL and integrating our expertise into practice, organizations can build a workforce prepared to recognize abuse, respond appropriately, and support healing throughout later life.
Older survivors deserve to be seen, heard, and protected. The time to act is now.
