Debunking Myths for WEAAD, Week 4: Elder Abuse and Abuse in Later Life

Elder abuse is more serious—and more common—than many people realize.

Persistent myths suggest elder abuse isn’t prevalent, isn’t severe, or doesn’t lead to serious harm. In reality, older adults experience devastating physical, emotional, and financial abuse, and in some cases, the consequences are lethal.

As the population ages, more older survivors are seeking help. Yet many systems remain underfunded and underprepared to respond effectively, leaving too many older adults without the support they need.

NCALL is working to change this narrative and this reality. Through free, specialized training and resources, national awareness campaigns, and systems‑level advocacy, we are leading efforts to debunk harmful myths and strengthen responses for older survivors.

Ending elder abuse requires informed communities, trained professionals, and sustained commitment. Together, we can ensure older adults are believed, supported, and protected.
