Nearly one in five U.S. adults lives with some type of mental illness — (52.9 million in 2020). Of that number, only 24.3 million received mental health services (46.2%).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 61 million adults in the United States live with a disability. That's roughly 26 percent of adults living in the United States.

Those of us who work in the domestic violence movement have heard it many times. There is a common misconception that it is easy to choose to end an abusive relationship. In reality, the decision to seek a life free from violence is a complex calculation, and unique to every survivor.
