Why Attend?

Abuse in later life refers to the intersection of domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. It is a critical yet often overlooked issue that threatens older adults’ health, safety, dignity, and longevity. As the population ages, more older adults will experience abuse, but cases remain under-identified and underreported.

Older Latin@ adults face unique challenges shaped by cultural identity, language barriers, and stigma. These factors can deepen isolation, discourage reporting, and limit access to resources due to fears of misunderstanding or discrimination. Further, gaps in data on the prevalence and dynamics within the Latin@ community highlight the need for tailored community engagement strategies. By recognizing these unique circumstances, we can strengthen support systems, empower Latin@ elders to seek help, and ensure their voices are heard.

To commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL) and Esperanza United will host a webinar—Safety, Support, and Solidarity: Addressing Abuse in Later Life Among Latin@ Elders—on October 21, 2025. This one-hour session will examine abuse in later life in the Latin@ community and consider its prevalence, common forms of abuse, protective and risk factors, barriers to support, and promising practices for improving services for Latin@ elders.

 What You’ll Learn:

As a result of attending this session, participants will be better able to:

  • Identify and define abuse in later life including its forms and dynamics;
  • Recognize how Latin@ elders’ cultural identity shapes their experience of abuse and help-seeking;
  • Discuss strategies for effectively reaching and serving Latin@ elders who experience abuse; and
  • Implement strategies for collaborating with community partners to better serve older Latin@ adults.
