Resources for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), first observed nationally in April 2001, is month-long effort to end sexual violence. In April, survivors, advocates, and allies engage the greater community in awareness and prevention efforts. We invite you to explore these SAAM resources:

  • NCALL’s Sexual Abuse in Later Life handout provides a general overview of statistics related to the prevalence and incidence of sexual abuse in later life. Our SAAM graphics are available for use to help spread awareness that sexual assault is a risk across the lifespan.
  • The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) has created campaign materials to aid SAAM awareness efforts. The NSVRC website also hosts materials on sexual assault in later life and offers resources on creating support and services for older survivors. To find materials supporting this year’s theme, Embrace Your Voice, please visit: http://www.nsvrc.org/saam.
  • End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI) launched the Start by Believing public awareness campaign to change the way communities respond to rape and sexual assault. At the core of this campaign is the notion that your response to a victim is critical. A negative response can worsen the trauma and foster an environment where perpetrators face no consequences for their crimes. With EVAWI’s permission, NCALL adapted this campaign by expanding it to include older survivors of abuse. We strive to challenge the assumption that older adults are not victims of sexual crimes. You can find our graphics here.
  • VAWnet’s special collection, Preventing and Responding to Domestic & Sexual Violence in Later Life, brings together selected materials related to preventing and responding to elder abuse and abuse in later life.
  • RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) has developed a planning guide to help to others learn more about sexual violence and how to take action to prevent it. Find the resources online at: https://www.rainn.org/SAAPM2018.
